How Princess Charlotte Will Shake Up Royal History When Her New Sibling Arrives

The line for the royal throne may be a long one for Kate Middleton and Prince William's children, but, at least, Princess Charlotte's position won't be affected with the arrival of the couple's third baby.

She can thank the Succession to the Crown Act 2013, because for the first time ever, a female royal's spot won't be altered by the birth of a male. According to the new legislation—which was passed when Kate Middleton was pregnant with Prince George—birth order, rather than gender, determines the next king or queen of England.

Therefore, even if the third royal baby is a boy, he will have to wait his turn, directly behind the 2-year-old, to become king. The history-making motion also allows those arising from a marriage to a Roman Catholic to remain in the running—something that previously disqualified a budding royal.

However, that's not to say that Charlotte doesn't have quite a few years—possibly a lifetime–to wait until she will see her day as queen. Currently, Prince Charles, Prince William's father, will inherit the throne after Queen Elizabeth passes away. Respectively, Prince William is second, and then comes his children, Prince George (third) and Princess Charlotte (fourth).

Prince Harry's days in the fifth spot are limited, with the third royal baby due any day now. Once he or she is born, Harry will move down to sixth in line. In a universe that confuses most people with its traditions, things just got a whole lot less complicated.

Pippa Middleton first made headlines when she wore that unforgettable white dress to sister Kate Middleton’s 2011 royal wedding. Since then, the two have been spotted together many times. But their relationship might not be as close as it seems, and it’s definitely not as close as it once was. The two sisters were extremely close growing up Kate and Pippa Middleton are less than two years apart. Growing up, the sisters were best friends. The girls grew up with their parents and brother and spent nearly every day together — the two were also very close with their younger brother, James Middleton. Kate has said that she wants to recreate the family dynamic she had while growing up and have a big, close-knit family. However, royalty can get in the way of close family relationships.

It was no secret that Pippa turned heads at William and Kate’s 2011 wedding. Pippa, then 27, nearly crashed Twitter when she showed up in a white dress with a neckline that didn’t seem fit for a royal wedding. The following day, there was just as much news about Pippa as there was about William and Kate. Although Kate didn’t have much to say about her sister overshadowing her big day, we’d like to think she probably wished she’d chosen a different outfit for her maid of honor.

When Pippa tied the knot with now-husband James Matthews in 2017, Kate did not play a role in her wedding. Why? Because the Duchess of Cambridge didn’t want to steal the spotlight on her sister’s big day. Instead, Kate decided she wanted to be in the background as much as possible, and only Prince George and Princess Charlotte would be in Pippa’s wedding. Perhaps that’s because Kate knows what it felt like to have someone else steal the limelight at your wedding.

There were rumors about Kate being annoyed with her sister’s engagement

Multiple reports came out after Pippa’s engagement that claimed Kate was not happy with Pippa’s “wild” fiancé. Reports also claimed that Pippa was sick of Kate’s judgmental attitude, and the two were not getting along since Pippa’s big news. However, William and Kate did release a statement saying they were very happy for Kate’s sister. While the royals always show proper poise and respect, it’s unclear if they released the statement just to avoid the publicized drama, or if they were actually perfectly fine with Pippa tying the knot.

They don’t see each other that often

Kate is a royal. Royals have things to do. As a result, Kate and Pippa don’t spend as much time together as they used to. When Kate married into the royal family, she gave up any hope of a normal life — which included normal hangouts with her younger sister. The two can’t wander into a coffee shop together without everyone turning heads. They can’t go on a shopping date anymore without tight-knit security. Spending carefree time with one another is a thing of the past, and those strict rules are bound to have some kind of impact on anyone.

The royal family has a different way of life

Pippa Middleton’s career plans were put on hold by her sister’s new family. E! Online reported that when Pippa wanted a career in television, she was “reined in” by her brother-in-law, who wasn’t happy with the wave of attention Pippa received at his wedding. A friend of Pippa’s told The Daily Mail, “It was felt by William in particular that she needed some guidance and support.” When Pippa had to be told how to live by her sister’s new husband’s standards, it likely caused some tension in the sisterly relationship.

Kids always make things more complicated

This goes for any relationship. Once kids are thrown into the mix, it becomes even harder to maintain a close relationship with your siblings. Especially since Kate’s kids happen to be a prince and princess. It’s possible that when Pippa and her new husband decide to have a baby, the families can have play dates all day every day. However, with Kate trying to raise two little ones (and soon to be more), and royal little ones nonetheless, it’s easy to drift from those who used to know you best.

Meghan Markle

Kate and Meghan Markle have met many times, and Prince Harry’s future wife has also spent time with Kate and William’s children. Considering Kate’s affinity for her brother-in-law it’s no surprise sources say she defended her future sister-in-law as the media reported about Markle’s previous divorce and sometimes-racy career.

Royal protocol doesn’t allow for a best man or maid of honor at royal weddings, but Prince William broke this rule when Harry was his best man in 2011. Many believe Harry will return the favor — and Kate could be Markle’s matron of honor.

The media noticed awkward dynamics between Princess Eugenie and Kate early on. But things seem better in recent years. Of course, Eugenie remains most loyal to her sister, Princess Beatrice (more on that drama later). But Eugenie is reportedly on good terms with the whole family, especially Princes William and Harry.

In January 2017, Buckingham Palace announced Eugenie’s engagement to long-term boyfriend Jack Brooksbank. Both the royal family and her fiancé’s family expressed delight over the upcoming nuptials. It seems the princess has a future of her own to focus on.

Kate reportedly dated Prince William for a while before meeting the queen for the first time at Peter and Autumn Phillips’ wedding. She and her royal grandmother have only grown closer since then.

Zuckerberg hedges on how Facebook tracks you

Some questions about Facebook are too tricky for its chief executive to answer.

In an extraordinary exchange during Tuesday’s testimony before Congress, Mark Zuckerberg hedged on whether the company tracked its users across devices, even when they may not be logged into the social media platform.

Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., asked Facebook’s founder and CEO whether the company collected “user data through cross-device tracking.”

“Senator, I believe we do link people’s accounts between devices, in order to make sure that their Facebook, Instagram and other experiences can be synced between devices.” Zuckerberg said.

Blunt followed up, asking if that included “offline data, data tracking that’s not necessarily linked to Facebook.”

“Senator, I want to make sure that we get this right, so I’m going to have my team follow up with you on this afterwards,” Zuckerberg responded.

“That doesn’t seem that complicated to me,” Blunt responded. “Now you understand this better than I do, but maybe you can explain to me why that’s that complicated. Do you track devices that an individual who uses Facebook has, that is connected to the device that they use for their Facebook connection but not necessarily connected to Facebook?”

Zuckerberg said.

Pressure has increased for the company to explain its terms of service and data gathering operations since details about the company’s 2016 election cooperation with Cambridge Analytica have become public, and the bulk of Tuesday’s session was devoted to questions about privacy.

In an article published last week by the American Civil Liberties Union, senior staff technologist Daniel Kahn Gillmor argued that Facebook was tracking him even though he wasn’t a member of the social network.

“While I’ve never ‘opted in’ to Facebook or any of the other big social networks, Facebook still has a detailed profile that can be used to target me,” Gillmor wrote. “I’ve never consented to having Facebook collect my data, which can be used to draw very detailed inferences about my life, my habits, and my relationships. As we aim to take Facebook to task for its breach of user trust, we need to think about what its capabilities imply for society overall. After all, if you do #deleteFacebook, you’ll find yourself in my shoes: non-consenting, but still subject to Facebook’s globe-spanning surveillance and targeting network.”

At Tuesday’s hearing, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., turned the tables on Zuckerberg, asking whether the Facebook founder would be comfortable sharing the name of the hotel where he stayed in Washington the night before.

“No, I would probably not choose to do that publicly here,” Zuckerberg responded.

“I think that may be what this is all about,” Durbin replied. “Your right to privacy. The limits of your right to privacy and how much you give away in modern America in the name of ‘connecting people around the world.’”

Prince Philip's Hip Surgery Was Successful

Prince Philip has left the hospital following a successful hip replacement. Per a statement from Buckingham Palace, "Prince Philip left King Edward VII’s Hospital at midday today, following a hip replacement operation last week. He will continue his recovery at Windsor. His Royal Highness would like to convey his appreciation for the messages of good wishes he has received."

On April 4, it was announced that the procedure had been successful. "The Duke of Edinburgh has undergone a successful hip replacement operation," reads a statement from the Palace. "He is progressing satisfactorily at this early stage. His Royal Highness is likely to remain in hospital for several days. He is comfortable and in good spirits."

Philip was admitted to King Edward VII hospital in central London on April 3 for the planned procedure.

The Duke of Edinburgh, 96, has been under the weather for weeks, and missed appearances at both Maundy Thursday and Easter church services due to issues with his health.

At this point, it is unclear if he will miss any upcoming events, as the royal family has a busy spring.

The Queen's 92nd birthday celebration will be later this month.
Additionally, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's third child is due in April, and, of course.

Prince Philip's health was reportedly the reason for Harry and Meghan's short engagement.

"[Prince Harry] wanted something close to home for the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen," royal expert Kate Nicholl told ET.

"In fact, one of the reasons that Prince Harry has wanted this wedding to happen quite quickly-this is really whirlwind by royal standards-is because his 96-year-old grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, is retired now and Prince Harry really wants him to be at his wedding."

The Royal Rule That Keeps Prince Philip From Being a King


Prince Philip became a member of the British royal family when he married then-Princess Elizabeth in November 1947. Born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, he gave up his titles on their wedding day and was instead named Duke of Edinburgh. When Elizabeth became queen after the death of her father in 1952, Philip did not become a king — and there's a longstanding rule that explains why. In the UK, the husband of a reigning queen is called a prince consort, no matter what. Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901, wanted to make her husband, Albert, king consort, but the British government wouldn't allow it because he was technically a foreigner. Instead, he was given the title of prince consort. Technically, there is no automatic right to any title when marrying a monarch; it wasn't until five years after her succession to the throne that Elizabeth II made Philip a prince of the United Kingdom, and he has never formally been designated a prince or king consort title, which is purely symbolic anyway.

On the flip side, the wife of a king normally gets the title of queen, but it too is only ceremonial; Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon, the Queen Mother, became queen consort when George VI became king, and the same rule goes for Kate Middleton, who will also earn the title when Prince William becomes king. An exception to this will be made when Prince Charles takes the throne, as Clarence House announced after their wedding that his wife, Camilla, will be known as princess consort, saying, "It is intended that Mrs. Parker Bowles should use the title HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne." However, when the time comes, Charles will have the power to upgrade her title to queen consort if he so chooses. And here's another plot twist: should Prince Philip outlive his wife and see his son Charles become king, he would be able to retain the style "his majesty" and could also be given the title king father, like that of the Queen Mother when Elizabeth II took the throne.
