"The bridge is up!  The bus can't go.  So everyone has to wait."  First the bus, then the car, then the bike -- so begins the long line of different vehicles waiting to cross the bridge.  What a traffic jam!  And when the bridge finally does comes down... nobody has to wait!  Babs' simple text and Rob Hefferan's joyous illustrations make this trip a fun, worthwhile read.  Teaches the value of patience.  Ages 2-5.

The bridge is up!
The BUS can't go,

so  everyone has to wait.

The bridge is up!
The bus can't go,
and the CAR
   can't go,

so  everyone has to wait.

The bridge is up.
The bus can't go,
the car
can't go,

and the BIKE
   can't go,

so  everyone has to wait.

The bridge is up.
The bus can't go,
the car can't go,
the bike can't go,

and the TRUCK
  can't go,

so  everyone has to wait.

The bridge is up.
The bus can't go,
the car can't go,
the bike can't go,
the truck can't go,

and the MOTOCYCLE
   can't go,

so  everyone has to wait.

The bridge is up.
The bus can't go,
the car can't go,
the bike can't go,
the truck can't go,
the motocycle can't go,

and the BULLDOZER
    can't go,

so  everyone has to wait.

The bridge is up.
The bus can't go,
the car can't go,
the bike can't go,
the truck can't go,
the motocycle can't go,
the bulldozer can't go,

and the TRACTOR
   can't go,

so           everyone               has to                wait.

Now the bridge is down!

So the bus can go,
   the car can go,
     the bike can go,
       the truck can go,
         the motocycle can go,
            the bulldozer can go,
              and the tractor can go!

Now nobody has to  wait!

I LIKE MYSELF

This morning I stood up and said:

I  like myself from toes to head!
I like the way I look today!
I like the way I work  and play!
I like the way I act with friends!
I like the way my body bends!
I  like who I was born to be!
I like myself!
   Hey!
          I like ME!

I CAN!  http://s9.uploads.ru/t/XNSFL.gif

I can count.
I can hop.
I can use a broom and mop.
I can dance.
I can draw.
I can build things with a saw.
I can wink.
I can think.
I can clean the bathroom sink.
I can read.
I can sing.
I can do most anything!

MY FACES

I can make...
a funny face
a sunny face
a twitchy-nose-like-bunny face
a pounting face
a shouting face
a wondering-and-doubting face
a sad face
a mad face
a feeling-kinda-bad face
a scary face
a merry face
a what-a-sour-berry! face

Whatever face you see in place
is my how-I-am-feeling face!

My Bones

My skeleton tries its best to hide
But I can feel my bones inside
           My arms
           My legs
  My shoulders
          My toes
          My ankles
          My fingers
          My knees
          My nose.

My skeleton tries its best to hide
But I can feel my bones inside

THUMP!
THUMP!
when I sit.

But when I run
just listen to it!
THUMPITY!
THUMPITY!
THUMPITY!
THUMPT!

Shel Silverstein
is the author-artist of many beloved books of prose and poetry. He was a cartoonist, playwright, poet, performer, recording artist, and Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated songwriter.

The Giving Tree is a beautiful book about a tree who loves a little boy. In the beginning, the love the two share is enough to make them both happy. As the boy grows older, his needs change and the tree gives him everything in order to help him achieve happiness. When the boy is gone and the tree is left with nothing, she is happy, but not really. Eventually the boy returns and the tree has nothing left to give, but the boy has changed and no longer wants anything from the tree other than the companionship they once shared, and both are happy once again.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is a tender story, alive with both sorrow and happiness. With its simple line drawings and almost lyrical writing it makes its reader stop and think about what it truly means to love someone.

Bed Rest

An animal rests
in a pen
or a nest
or a den
or a river
or sea.

But I like to rest
in a bed
and it's best...
if Teddy is resting with me.  http://s9.uploads.ru/t/2FUo4.gif
